Welcome To Avon by the Sea, New Jersey

In 1855 the area in Monmouth County, New Jersey we now know as Avon-By-The-Sea was then identified, depending on which map you looked at, as New Branch, the Swanton Tract or the Lewis Greene property. About 20 years later Edward Batchelor, a wealthy Philadelphia tobacco manufacturer bought 300 acres of land, and he began investing to develop a resort community. Batchelor was searching for a good fishing spot when he passed through “New Branch,” and he paid $45,000 for his 300 acres. He began in 1897, with the aid of Robert C. Love (surveyor) and F.G. Harrison (engineer) to shape his land into the resort that it would become by laying out streets and selling lots. In the decade that followed Batchelor provided the necessary investment for the roads and infrastructure required to build the town.

On March 23, 1900 a legislative act incorporated Avon-By-The-Sea, a boardwalk was built, fire companies were organized, a school was constructed in 1908, a library in 1916, and, according to the 2000 Census, the population consisted of 1,043 households, 535 families and 2,244 local residents.

The best word to describe Avon-By-The-Sea is “Victorian.” Avon-By-The-Sea is surrounded by water: Sylvan Lake (to the north and home to their famous swans), Shark River inlet (to the south), and the Atlantic Ocean (to the east). The white sandy beaches are the perfect place for summer fun, but Avon-By-The-Sea is a year-round community, and fishing, boating and scuba diving are among the recreational activities available in this lovely Victorian shore resort town.

Visitors discover delightful Victorian Bed and Breakfast inns, guest houses, fine restaurants and quaint shops. Even the non-commercial boardwalk is Victorian in character with Victorian lamps, benches and pavilions offering a great place to relax and enjoy the views.
